Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural substance found in a plant called Cannabis sativa, which is also known as cannabis or hemp. People are using CBD for many different health issues, but some of the strongest scientific evidence supports its effectiveness in treating some severe types of epilepsy that affect children. These epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), often do not respond well to regular seizure medications. CBD has been shown in multiple studies to reduce the number of seizures in these conditions and, in some cases, even stop them completely.
There is also some evidence from studies done on animals and reports from people that suggest CBD may help with other health problems. These include anxiety, chronic pain, inflammation caused by arthritis, nausea, and difficulty sleeping (insomnia). Animal studies have also shown that CBD might help reduce cravings for substances like alcohol, cannabis, opiates, and stimulants. This could potentially be helpful in reducing harm associated with addiction.
It's important to note that while there is promising evidence for these uses of CBD, more research is still needed to fully understand its effects and determine the appropriate ways to use it for different health conditions.
